Who We Are

We are a body of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ as described in the New Testament. Christ is the ultimate authority of this church as He reveals His will through Scripture by the illumination of the Holy Spirit. Sunnyside Baptist Church is elder-led, deacon-served, and congregationally-driven.

We Believe...

that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of doctrine and life.  2 Timothy 3:16 | 2 Peter 1:20-21 | Mark 13:31 | John 8:31-32, 20:31 | Acts 20:32

We Believe...

that there is one God, eternally coexisting in the three persons of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; that these are equal in every way, yet they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation and redemption; that God is unconditionally sovereign in all His desires, choices, and actions.  Genesis 1:1, 26 | Matthew 28:19 | John 6:27 | Romans 1:7 | 2 Corinthians 13:14 | 1 Timothy 2:5-6 | 1 Peter 1:3, 11 | Psalm 33:11, 103:19, 115:3 | Isaiah 46:9-10 | Daniel 4:34-35

We Believe...

in the deity of Jesus Christ; in His virgin birth; in His perfect, sinless life; in His miracles; in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood; in His bodily resurrection; in His ascension to heaven to the right hand of God the Father; and in His personal and visible return in power and glory.  Matthew 1:18-25, 16:16, 24:29-31 | John 1:1, 20:28 | Romans 1:4, 5:6-10 | 2 Corinthians 5:21 | 1 Peter 2:21-24 | Hebrews 1:3, 10-12, 4:15, 9:28 | Acts 1:9-11 | 1 Timothy 3:16

We Believe...

the Holy Spirit was sent from the Father and Son to convict mankind of sin, righteousness, and judgment; that He permanently indwells every believer from the moment of salvation; that He regenerates, sanctifies, empowers, teaches, guides, and fills disciples of Jesus Christ as they yield to Him.  John 14:16-17, 26, 16:8-15 | Romans 8:9-11 | 1 Corinthians 6:19 | Galatians 5:16-26 | Titus 3:5 | Acts 1:8 | Ephesians 5:18 | 1 John 2:27

We Believe...

that although mankind was made in God’s image, all are now sinners by a nature inherited from Adam and by their own choices, radically corrupt and estranged from God; that those who die in this state suffer eternal torment in Hell; that salvation of man removes all guilt of sin and makes one acceptable to God and a member of His family; that this salvation from sin is instantaneous and accomplished solely by the Holy Spirit through the word of God when the repentant sinner responds in faith to the Gospel; that this salvation is wholly of God by grace on the merit of Christ’s shed blood and not on the basis of human merit or works; that the redeemed are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever; that the redeemed who die go immediately into God’s direct presence. Genesis 1:16, 2:17, 3:22 | John 1:12-13, 3:14-16, 5:24, 10:27-29 | 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 | James 1:14-15 | Romans 3:10-19, 5:6-10, 12-19, 10:9-10, 17 | Isaiah 1:18 | Luke 13:3, 5 | 2 Corinthians 5:6, 17 | Titus 3:5-7 | Ephesians 1:4-7, 13, 2:8-9

We Believe...

in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members; that the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized on their profession of faith, and associated for worship, fellowship, and ministry, has been given the primary task of extending the gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost world.  Ephesians 1:22-23, 4:4-6, 11-16 | Acts 1:8, 2:38, 42, 5:42 | Hebrews 10:23-25 | 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 | Philippians 2:15 | Colossians 4:5-6

We Believe...

in the bodily resurrection of the saved unto eternal life in the presence of the Lord and of the unsaved unto eternal torment in Hell.  John 5:25-29 | Matthew 25:31-46 | Revelation 20:4-6 | 1 Corinthians 15:50-54 | 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

A Brief History

Sunnyside Baptist Church was established June 30, 1952 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with the stated purpose “to preach the Gospel, evangelize, and train Christian workers.”  Planted in an old orchard on the sunny side of the street, this church has continued to grow in the light of Christ, her Lord. In 1972 from a vision of Sunnyside Baptist Church and its pastor, Harry Boydstun, Christian Heritage Academy began. The school was launched as a new private Christian school in south Oklahoma City meeting in the facilities of Sunnyside Baptist Church but separately incorporated.  It was one of the first such schools in the area. Sunnyside Baptist Church has been blessed by the pastorates of these men:

W. E. Cresswell (1952-1956)

Harry Boydstun (1956-1959)

Emmett Boydstun (1959-1964)

Jack James (1964-1966)
